Police: Couple Arrested After Trying To Cash Stolen Check

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — CMPD says a couple was arrested for attempting to cash a stolen check.

Employees of the State Employees Credit Union branch in Pineville notified a woman that someone was attempting to cash a check drawn from her account.  The woman informed the bank that the suspect did not have permission to do so and that this was a case of fraud.

The woman then went out to her car and realized it had been broken into at some point during the night.  Police say she found that her checkbook and several other belongings had been stolen.

The woman’s car had been left unlocked while it was parked in the driveway of her residence located in Charlotte, according to a news release.

The SECU employees then notified the Pineville Police Department who immediately responded and were able to take two suspects into custody.  Both suspects were reportedly in possession of items belonging to the victim.

Police say both suspects eventually confessed to the crime.  Christian North was charged with larceny from auto, misdemeanor larceny, possession of stolen property and possession of schedule IV narcotics.  Kaitlyn Austin was charged with possession of stolen property and uttering forged instruments.

During the investigation, police say they determined that Austin had been assaulted by North on October 22nd.  North is also facing assault inflicting serious injury charges for that incident.
