CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say they arrested an 18-year-old and a 14-year-old for breaking into vehicles in the Dunn Commons neighborhood of Charlotte.
Officers were called to the area after someone reported that people were breaking into vehicles. Once officers arrived on the scene they located a vehicle, which they later determined to be stolen, leaving the area. Officers say they tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but it fled from officers at a high rate of speed.
Minutes later, the vehicle was found wrecked and abandoned in the area of Rozzelles Ferry Road, according to a news release.
Police say two subjects were found walking away from the area of the crash carrying backpacks. One of the suspects, identified as Prentiss Stafford, was reportedly sweating profusely. The second subject, a 14-year-old juvenile, was walking with Stafford.
While speaking with the two males, police say they located a debit card belonging to another person in Stafford’s backpack. Officer’s went the person’s home listed on the debit card and determined that the man was victim of a car break-in.
Stafford was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle and misdemeanor larceny. The juvenile was charged with violating the Youth Protection Ordinance.
