Hundreds Line Roads For Detective’s Funeral Procession

CHARLOTTE, NC– The procession from Detective Mike Doty’s funeral to the cemetery was nearly one hour long Monday.

Strangers and residents lined the side of the road to salute his casket and family.

Hundreds lined up, wiping tears as his casket passed.

“It’s just heartbreaking to see a family go through what they’re going through,” said Cynthia McKay.

McKay is a Gastonia Firefighter who brought her kids along to honor the York County Sheriff’s Deputy..

“It’s really heartwarming to see that everybody can come together,” said McKay.

“He just had a big heart and a sense of humor he kept you laughing non-stop,” said Myra Durham.

One mother said he carried the torch in the Special Olympics in which her daughter competes.

“Very sad,” said Lisa Duggins. “To know that our people who are out there to help us have to be took down such a way as this.”

Heads bowed as residents watched his casket arrive on horse and buggy to the cemetery.

Fellow officers made their final salute.

“He was a good person,” said Durham.

Tears fell when the sheriff’s office made the final call over the scanner.
