Rising Spotlight: Storm Water Services Second Saturday Cleanup
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — You can help keep the community clean! Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is hosting monthly second Saturday cleanups.
Ashley Smith, an environmental specialist, came by to talk more about the program, along with another big event coming up as well. Second Saturday Events can be a stream cleanup, where volunteers would help remove trash and debris from our streams, along with tree maintenance; planting thousands of seedlings in flood plain areas, and helping keep them healthy.
There will also be Storm Drain Marking Rallies in different neighborhoods as a part of Second Saturday. Volunteers can come to and pick up supplies from our staff the day of the event and we provide them with a map of a neighborhood that needs the storm drains marked.
Staff will be at a different location every second Saturday of the month with supplies and snacks for volunteers.
February 10 – Stream Cleanup, 9:00am-12:00pm, 5128 Kildare Drive, Charlotte
March 10 – Stream Cleanup, 9:00am-12:00pm, 3970 Bristol Drive, Charlotte
May 12 – Stream Clean-up, 9:00am-12:00pm, location TBA
However, the largest volunteer event, The Big Spring Clean is coming up on March 24, 2018. For this event, volunteers can come to multiple locations throughout the county and help clean trash out of the stream. The event is held from 9:00am-1:00pm, and sites are available for all ages and abilities. Last year this event had over 200 volunteers and removed over 3 tons of trash.
There is no need to register, although if you have a large group please email Ashley.Smith@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov to ensure there will be enough supplies.
Can’t make it to a Second Saturday event? CMSWS can also offer one-time cleanup events for individuals or groups who want to clean up a specific location on a particular date. If your group would like to take ownership of a stream and clean it regularly visit the Adopt-A-Stream page for more information.
