Wilson’s World: At Hidden Valley Elementary Kicking Off Read Across America Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –  Wilson was at Hidden Valley Elementary School where he was with volunteers with Promising Pages as they kick off Read Across America Week for 2018 and this year’s “Books on Break” program.  To celebrate Read Across America, over 1,000 books have been hidden around Hidden Valley for students to find during the week.  Students will also be having all sorts of great events throughout the week to celebrate reading and will conclude the week with a parade on Friday.

With partnerships with Read Charlotte and other community partners, Promising Pages’   “Books on Break” program gives students who are in Title I schools access to books during summer break to ensure they stay sharp and ready for school when summer is over.

This year, the summer “Books on Break” program goal is to reach 10,000 students in CMS schools.  Thousands of books are still needed as well as hundreds of volunteers to get the books together.  Volunteering is a great opportunity for church groups and community groups.

Over 60,000 children in the Greater Charlotte area are growing up without books that help them learn to read and grow.  To find out more about Promising Pages, how you can donate those books that your kids have outgrown or how to volunteer go to their website at promisingpages.org.

Promising Pages also has summer internships available.  Both high school and college kids may apply.  To find out more about their internships or to apply, go to their website HERE.
