Man Charged In Stabbing Death Of 87-Year-Old In Union County

STALLINGS, N.C. — Investigators say they arrested a man in the stabbing death of an 87-year-old in Stallings.

Stephen Smithson, 51, has been charged with first degree murder in the September 2017 stabbing death of Simual “S.A.” Augusta Flowe.

Flowe’s body was found at his home on Gribble Road.  An autopsy revealed Flowe died from multiple stab wounds.

Detectives say they determined Smithson was a former tenant of Flowe’s in a trailer park located nearby.  Detectives believe Flowe evicted Smithson from a trailer while Smithson was incarcerated in the Mecklenburg County Jail.

Once Smithson was released from jail, detectives say he went to Flowe’s home to discuss a place to live.  That is when officials believe the murder happened.

In addition to the murder charge, Smithson also faces a parole/probation violation charge and is in jail with no bond.
