ORIGINAL STORY:
CHARLOTTE, NC — A heartbroken husband is talking about the brutal murder of his wife in East Charlotte Tuesday morning.
Police say Maria Echeverria de Gomez just stepped out of their apartment on Barrington Dr. when two men jumped out of a black car and robbed her then shot and killed her.
She was waiting on her brother to pick her up to go to their landscaping job.
“Not only did they kill my wife, but they also destroyed a family,” said Nano Gomez, through a translator.
Officers say his wife was walking out of their apartment before 6:15 Tuesday morning when the shooting happened.
Neighbors like Don Nance are cautious now.
“To the guys who did it, they some cowards,” said Nance. “I just hope that they sleep at night good knowing they just killed somebodyβs mom.”
She was 36-years-old, lived here with her husband and 13-year-old son. Her husband says they moved to the states more than a year ago.
“My wife didn’t spend any time resting,” said Gomez. “All the time that she had, she would work to provide for her child.”
Neighbors say robbers target this area often. It’s a complex with many immigrants, some who fear calling police.
I have a lot of friends, they not call the police because they’re scared,” said Efrain Lopez. We asked CMPD.
“There is not a reason not to trust us,” said
Lt. Susan Manassah “CMPD does not market or go out on this immigration campaigns and take Hispanics to jail just for being an immigrant. That’s
not a true statement.”
Police say if you saw anything in that area Tuesday morning, call CMPD. They need your help bringing this family closure.
