Pregnant Woman And Man Shot In West Charlotte Are Recovering, Suspects In Shooting Lead Police On High-Speed Chase

CHARLOTTE, NC.–  A pregnant woman and a man are recovering after they were shot in West Charlotte. Police arrested two suspects in the shooting following a high-speed chase.

The double shooting happened just after noon Wednesday on Alice Avenue off of Tuckaseegee Road. CMPD officers caught up with the suspects near Brookshire Boulevard and I-85, then chased them into Gaston County. That chase ended near the McAdenville exit.

Witnesses say a pregnant woman and a man collapsed on Effingham Road shortly after noon. Police say they were shot a few blocks away on Alice Avenue.

“I was in my bed and I heard about 8 to 10 shots,” says West Charlotte resident Christine Jenkins.

Neighbors say the victims were covered in blood. One resident says he got them towels to help stop the bleeding. Jenkins says she also tried to help.

“I called, me along with other people, called the police.”

Officers got a description of the suspects and their car, before locating it near Brookshire Boulevard and I-85. The driver refused to stop, leading police on a high-speed chase into Gaston County. CMPD says the suspects jumped out of the car and ran near the McAdenville exit.

Police arrested 22-year-old Reco Perry and 22-year-old Tahjah Quarles a short time later. It was about an hour from the time of the shooting until their arrest.

The victims are expected to be okay, but residents say they’re praying for the unborn child.

“It breaks my heart. It breaks my heart to know that another child is coming into a world that’s going to have to deal with violence like this.”

CMPD says the suspects and the victims know each other. Perry and Quarles face several charges, including Battery of an Unborn Child, Assault With a Deadly Weapon and Resisting an Officer. Police say Perry was driving the car, so he will likely face additional charges.
