Firestorm After Council Member’s 9/11 Facebook Post
CHARLOTTE, NC — A Charlotte City Council Member is in the middle of a social media firestorm after she posted a conspiracy theory about the 9/11 terror attacks.
People online are calling LaWana Mayfield an embarrassment, disgraceful, insulting and more.
Some are vowing to not vote for her again, and a handful are saying she should resign.
It had council members WCCB Charlotte spoke with taking a long pause.
“You do have to be responsible for what you put out there,” said Council Member Braxton Winston.
Council Member Mayfield posted an article calling the World Trade Center attack a controlled demolition. She wrote, “I am still waiting for someone to produce pieces of the alleged plane that opened the doors for US Citizens to lose all privacy rights (from the conspiracy theorist in me)”
The subject hits close to home for
Council Member Winston.
“My father is a fireman in New York City. I used to see the towers from my mother’s bedroom window. so my family is highly affected by it,” said Council Member Winston.
WCCB Charlotte stopped by Council Member Mayfield’s home, office, called and texted. No Response.
She updated her post, writing, “This was NOT shared to cause controversy yet it has. Freedom of speech allows you to share your thoughts and many have done that below.”
“This is her post. She’s got to own it. It looks like from the comments, she’s doing that, but this is her page and her choice to post things and engage her constituents,” said Council Member Justin Harlow.
Council Member Ed Driggs says what she posts isn’t city business.
Tariq Bokhari says he’s not even sure what to say.
To call this a sensitive subject, puts it lightly.
“It’s something that sticks with you forever, but it’s something we all experienced,” said Council Member Winston.
