Albemarle Robbery Suspect Dies In Fiery Wreck While Fleeing From Police

ALBEMARLE, N.C. —Β  A robbery suspect is dead after the vehicle he was a passenger in crashed while attempting to evade police, according to police.

The incident began at about 12:48 a.m. Wednesday morning when officers noticed suspicious activity at the Mazatlan Restaurant on Hilco Street in Albemarle.

Police say a vehicle was backed up to the restaurant with the headlights on, as a person wearing a ski mask exited the front door of the business.

Officers noticed the front door was damaged and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver proceeded to flee the scene.

The suspect vehicle fled to NC Highway 740 and entered Badin before crashing into a tree.

The crash caused the vehicle, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox believed to be a rental, to explode into flames.

Police were unable to rescue the passenger from the burning vehicle before he died.Β  Police have not released his identity.

Officers were able to rescue the driver, Shaidae Glover, from the vehicle.Β  She was transported to the hospital and treated for her injuries.Β  Charges are pending for Ms. Glover at this time.

The case is still under investigation.
