Train Derailment in Fort Mill
FORT MILL, SC — Crews expect to be working throughout the weekend to clean up a train derailment in Fort Mill.
The derailment did not block any roads and no one was hurt, but it will take days to clean up, York County Emergency Management says.
16 Norfolk Southern train cars went off the tracks near Maple St. around 4:00 Friday afternoon. That’s about two miles from Downtown Fort Mill.
Two cars ended up in a creek and nine others flipped on an embankment. They spilled frozen food, fertilizer, and diesel
fuel, according to Norfolk Southern.
Just after 8:00 Friday night, backhoes showed up. Crews will use cranes to lift cars up. The train was 85 cars long. The NTSB will investigate to find out why it happened.
