STATESVILLE, N.C. — A Statesville man was killed early Sunday morning after the car he was driving struck a utility pole and flipped in downtown Statesville on E. Front St.
Statesville Police Chief Joe Barone said a SPD officer witnessed the car traveling at a high rate of speed and running numerous red lights on Front St. about 5 a.m. today.
The officer followed the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop, but was unable to do so before the vehicle wrecked. The driver died at the scene. The name of the driver has not been released.
Barone said the NC Highway Patrol has been called in to investigate the incident.
