Man Describes Deputy Shot In Caldwell County
Caldwell County, NC — Instinct took over for Gather King when he says he heard gunfire outside his house and ran toward it.
“I knew he was hurt,” said King. “I took off running.”
King found 21-year-old Caldwell County Sheriff’s Deputy Jordan Sherrill on the ground with a gunshot wound to his abdomen right below his bullet proof vest.
“I compressed his wounds so I knew he wouldn’t bleed out,” said King. “I knew he it was straight through, and I talked to him so he wouldn’t go in shock or pass out or something like that.”
The shooting happened just after 11:30 Sunday night on Cheraw Rd. near Pisgah Church Rd.
The sheriff says the deputy had just pulled over this blue Toyota Corolla for a traffic violation. A man and woman were inside.
When he walked up, detectives say someone in the car shot the deputy and sped off.
“Probably about three minutes time, EMS showed up, and I let those guys take over,” said King.
Deputies are sharing a photo of the car on social media. They are offering a $1,000 reward through crime stoppers to whoever can lead them to the shooter. You can remain anonymous.
The license plate number for the Corolla is AFJ5570.
Deputies thanked king for helping save Deputy Sherill.
“They let me know that he pulled through the surgery, and I’m glad he’s okay,” said King.
