Testimony Transcript Request Delays Deliberations Another Day In The Kevin Olsen Trial

CHARLOTTE, NC — Former UNC Charlotte quarterback Kevin Olsen will be back in the courtroom Wednesday for a third day of jury deliberations. Deliberations were cut short Tuesday when the jury asked for transcripts of testimony.

The second day of jury deliberations in Kevin Olsen’s trial came to a halt after roughly an hour because jurors wanted the transcript of testimony from a digital expert.

The defense used him to back up claims that Olsen’s ex-girlfriend sent text messages to a friend saying Olsen was not a rapist, and she was iffy about the rape charges.

Prosecutors started the trial last Monday with the ex-girlfriend on the witness stand but asked us not to reveal her identity because she is a suspected rape victim.

She told jurors Olsen tried to kill himself after a night of drinking in February 2017. She says he then beat her, leaving her with a black eye and bruises.

After that, she says he wanted sex and she was too scared to say no.

Kristen Northrup, Mecklenburg County Assistant District Attorney says, “If she said yes, and she was scared because he just beat her, it’s still rape.”

Defense attorneys argued the ex-girlfriend is not credible because of her timeline and text messages.

Defense Attorney George Laughrun says, “The truth is what it is, and the truth was that rape never happened.”

The court reporter told the judge it would take several hours to prepare the transcript, so at 2:30 pm she sent the jury home saying she didn’t want them to rush.

Olsen is charged with three counts of Second Degree Forcible Rape and one count of Second Degree Sexual Offense. He faces up to 24 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
