Victim Identified In Deadly Independence Boulevard Accident

CMPD has identified the victim as 21-year-old Demarcus Lamont Fleming.

A man has been charged after fatally striking a pedestrian with his vehicle on Independence Boulevard near Sardis Road North Thursday Morning.

Kenneth Blake Crowder Jr., 57, has been charged with misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle and Failure to Maintain a Lane of Travel.

The CMPD says Crowder Jr., was traveling west on Independence Boulevard when his 2009 Honda Pilot drifted right and out of the lane travel where it struck the victim, who was walking with the flow of traffic.

Police say the victim is a 21-year-old black male, but his name is being withheld pending family notification.

Speed and impairment are not factors in the crash.  This is an ongoing investigation and any witnesses are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers or Detective Oberer with the Major Crash Unit at 704-432-2169.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A person is dead after a crash on Independence Boulevard early Thursday morning.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating the fatal wreck that occurred in the 8200 block of E. Independence Boulevard at Sardis Road North.

Authorities say a pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene.

All inbound Independence Boulevard traffic is being diverted onto Sardis Rd North to Monroe Rd. The inbound lanes could remain closed several hours as police investigate the crash. The outbound lanes, however, are open.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible. Expect heavy traffic in the area.
