CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three children left without a mother following a murder in Steele Creek. The woman’s boyfriend is charged. WCCB learned he has a history of domestic violence arrests.
Friends and family mourning the loss of Stephanie Potts.
“She was amazing, she was so kind hearted, she had whole heart, she took in anyone who needed help,” says Potts’ son’s girlfriend Briana Lee.
Police found Potts dead inside her home on Black Chestnut Place in Steele Creek Sunday afternoon, after being called to do a wellness check. Police arrested Potts’ live- in boyfriend, Deshawn Clipper, Monday in Greensboro. The 31-year-old is charged with first degree murder. Investigators haven’t said how Potts died.
Court records show clipper has a pending charge for assaulting Potts in September. Documents say he threw a ring of keys and hit Potts in the head. In 2009, another woman took out a domestic violence order of protection against him. The order says Clipper tried to suffocate a woman and threatened to kill her. Records show Clipper violated the order of protection.
“There is a pattern here, it’s very disturbing that Mr. Clipper has a history of domestic violence, not only against this victim, but others,” says CMPD Captain Chris Dozier.
