The Holiday Travel Rush Is Underway
CHARLOTTE, NC. — The holiday travel rush is underway. A record number of people in the Carolinas will travel for Thanksgiving this year. WCCB is helping you skip the stress with holiday travel hacks.
The Highway Patrol says expect the worst traffic on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after. All State Troopers will be working on those days. The best time to get on the road–the morning.
“As early as possible. Most people are getting off work a little early. That 4 pm to 8 pm window is typically our busiest travel time,” says NC Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Pierce.
Highway Patrol says if you’re driving on I-77 or I-85, be prepared to add an hour to your trip.
Charlotte-Douglas is expecting holiday travel to be busier than ever this year, with roughly 30,000 more passengers than usual on peak days. Those days are next Tuesday and Wednesday.
The long term parking lots typically fill up by the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. If you’re dropping someone off or picking them up, use the cell phone lot to prevent traffic.
