Statesville HS Student Charged With Bringing Gun To School

STATESVILLE, NC — A 15-year-old student is facing charges after authorities say he brought a gun to campus Monday afternoon.

The School Resource Officer was monitoring students in the cafeteria and reportedly became suspicious when she noticed the student showing others an item in his backpack. The student was taken to the assistant principal’s office, according to officials, and admitted to having a weapon prior to a search.

Authorities searched the backpack and say they found an unloaded .45 caliber handgun, along with a full magazine of ammunition.

Satesville Police say no threats were ever made towards any students or staff, and no one else was involved.

“I have to thank the quick thinking of School Resource Officer Kathleen Pope.  She noticed something was afoot and notified administration immediately and let the search process take over,” said Principal Hans Lassiter in a statement. “Decisions, no matter how youthful, no matter how ill-timed, have consequences.  Here we have a young man who has signed away one full year
of his education and possibly his freedom. The safety of our students and staff takes priority.”

The student is charged two felonies, which include Possession of a Firearm on a School Campus and Carrying a Concealed Weapon on an Educational Campus. His name is not being released due to his age.
