Inmates Charged With Assaulting Detention Officers, Inciting Riot In Iredell County
IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Three inmates have been charged after multiple detention officers were assaulted at the Iredell County Detention Center.
Authorities say Martevis Simpson became aggressive with a detention officer while being escorted back to his housing pod following a family and friends visit.
Simpson struck the officer with handcuffs, as the officer was removing them from Simpson’s wrists, causing cuts and other injuries. Other officers were able to subdue Simpson and place him back in handcuffs, but officers say he refused to fully cooperate.
Other inmates began reacting to this incident and creating a disturbance by becoming loud and banging on the glass portion of the doors. Patrol officers and other law enforcement agents responded to assist, as several inmates became involved in the disturbance.
Prior to anyone entering the cell, officials say several inmates had placed make shift masks on their faces in an attempt to shield themselves from pepper spray.
Detention officers entered the housing pod to detain Shyheim Millsaps, who was reportedly one of the agitators. Millsaps became loud and aggressive with the officers, and when the first officer approached him they say he refused to obey orders and attacked the officer.
While officers were trying to subdue Millsaps, inmate Rick Chambers assaulted struck one of the officers from behind. More officers responded, and were able to subdue both inmates. Officers used pepper spray to control the disruption.
Although other inmates continued to be disruptive, officers were able to diffuse the situation.
