City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County Release Documents On Failed Bid For Amazon HQ2

CHARLOTTE, NC — Newly released documents from the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County show just how much was offered to Amazon in hopes of bringing its second major headquarters to the Queen City.

According to the documents, the city and county agreed to pay Amazon more than $270 million over a 15 year period to bring their second headquarters to the area.

The bid also included 25 sites for Amazon to choose from throughout seven counties, including Mecklenburg. More than a dozen would have been in Charlotte.

Officials say the bid was based on an investment schedule provided by Amazon that showed an estimated 50,000 new jobs being brought to the area at an average wage of $100,000 and a $50 billion capital investment.

The project was hailed as an “unparalleled opportunity” by city and county leaders.

In the end, Amazon chose to split its new headquarters between locations in New York and Virginia.
