I-77 NB Shutdown After SUV Crashes Into Overhead Sign, Traffic Backed Up For Miles

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — All lanes of I-77 northbound near Exit 25 are closed after an SUV crashed into an overhead sign early Friday.

The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. just past Sam Furr Road.

The sign was damaged and knocked off its base, according to authorities.

Medic says one person suffered minor injuries and another person has life-threatening injuries.

The highway could be shutdown for several hours as crews need time to remove the structure and ensure driver safety.

Drivers are asked to use Statesville Avenue to Statesville Road as an alternate route.

Drivers heading north on I-77 are being detoured via exit 25 (Sam Furr Road) to U.S. 21 North in Cornelius, turning left on Catawba Avenue to return to I-77 North.

Heavy congestion is expected and drivers are urged to avoid this area, if possible.

All lanes of I-77 southbound are open.
