Belk Bowl Means Big Bucks For Businesses In The Queen City
CHARLOTTE, NC. — Belk Bowl festivities are officially underway in Uptown after a organizers cancelled some events because of Friday’s bad weather.
Many traveled from out of town to watch South Carolina and Virginia face off in the Belk Bowl. Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority says the bowl game gave Charlotte a $10 million economic boost last year, and $5.9 million in direct visitor spending.
That means big bucks for local businesses in the Queen City. Restaurants like the Mellow Mushroom will have all hands on deck Saturday.
“Just for business alone, we do probably about a third if not a little bit more of our sales just in that one day,” says Mellow Mushroom general manager Thomas Spearman.
Hotels are also reaping the benefits. The CRVA says more than 6,000 people stayed overnight for the Belk Bowl last year. That generated more than 7,000 hotel rooms.
“It’s a great venue for the football game, especially with Uptown,” says Richmond resident Carlos Seacrest.
