Pedestrian Hit By Multiple Cars And Killed In North Charlotte Identified; One Driver Charged

The victim has been identified 19-year-old Demetrice Shakeal Gillespie.

The CMPD says 22-year-old Christian Chandler contacted police on January 1st and was voluntarily interviewed by detectives at the University City division office.

Mr. Chandler has been arrested and charged with Felony Hit and Run. Authorities also located the black 2018 Nissan Altima Mr. Chandler was driving the night of the accident.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —  Police say a pedestrian was hit by multiple cars and killed in north Charlotte Tuesday morning.

Investigators say the pedestrian was walking in North Tryon street when he was hit by a 2013-2018 black Nissan Altima and thrown 50 feet into the right hand lane of North Tryon Street.

Shortly thereafter, the victim was struck by a 2007 Honda CRV, that was traveling behind the Nissan Altima, and was thrown an additional 60 feet.

The victims was then hit by a 2011 Hyundai Sonata and dragged approximately 1000 feet underneath the Hyundai before the driver stopped in a parking lot.

MEDIC pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The drivers of the 2007 Honda CRV and the 2011 Hyundai Sonata stayed on the scene following the accident.  Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash for these drivers.

The black Nissan Altima did not remain at the scene and it is unknown whether speed or alcohol were factors in the collision for the driver.
