Catawba County Sheriff Warns Residents About Recent Phone Scam

CATAWBA COUNTY, NC — The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on alert regarding a recent telephone scam.

The scammers are reportedly calling to “inform” victims that they have missed jury duty and warrants for their arrest have been issued. The scammer will then tell victims to send money to avoid arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office says the suspect caller usually identifies themselves using the name of a current deputy, and the number even appears as a number from the CCSO. The suspect caller will also provide the victim’s name, address and birthdate, which is information the Sheriff’s Office says can all be found online.

“This is a Scam. Do not give out ANY personal information or transfer/send money to anyone over the phone. Law Enforcement, the Clerk of Court, the District Attorney, and other Government Agencies WILL NOT ask for personal information or money over the phone,” says Sheriff Brown.

If you have concerns, please call the Sheriff’s Office at 828-464-5241.
