CMPD Charges Suspect In 1992 Sex Assault Cold Case

CHARLOTTE, NC — After more than two decades, a man is now facing charges for allegedly robbing two women at gunpoint and then sexually assaulting them in north Charlotte.

Antwan Kirkland, 45, was only 19-years-old when the alleged crime took place on May 30, 1992.

Police say the then 19 and 20-year-old victims were leaving the Charlotte area when they accepted directions from Kirkland and another unknown man. The men got into the victims’ vehicle, police say, and directed them to a secluded area on Cheviot Road.

That’s when the victims told police they were robbed of their jewelry at gunpoint and sexually assaulted.

Sexual assault kits were completed at CMC following the attack, and additional testing was done in 2018 as part of a federal grant received by CMPD.

Investigators say DNA evidence confirmed Kirkland as a suspect. He was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two counts of 1st degree Rape, four counts of 1st degree Sex Offense, two counts of 1st degree Kidnapping, and two counts of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.
