Van Wyck Elementary School Placed On Lockdown After Teen Escapes Behavioral Health Facility

LANCASTER, S.C. — Deputies say Van Wyck Elementary School was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a teenager ran from a behavioral health facility on Highway 521.

Officials say a 18-year-old man was being transported to the Rebound Behavioral Health facility but ran from authorities once they arrived at the facility.

The incident was near Van Wyck Elementary School so officials placed the school on lockdown as a precaution.

A deputy and a K-9 responded to the scene and located the teen in a heavily wooded area off Three Crow Road just before 1pm.Β  The teen was wet and cold but otherwise uninjured and was taken to a medical facility for examination, according to a news release.Β  Deputies say the teen was not an arrestee at the time he ran from the behavioral health facility, was not armed, and posed no threat to citizens.

Sheriff Barry Faile said,

β€œWe’re glad this young man was located pretty quickly and that he’s safe and healthy. Because of all the recent rainfall and cool temperatures, today was not a good day to be wandering in the woods. Our officers did an outstanding job responding to the area to contain it, and our K-9 unit led us directly to him.”
