Skunk Tests Positive For Rabies In Mecklenburg County

CORNELIUS, NC — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care & Control says a skunk captured in Cornelius has tested positive for rabies.

The department says their liason with the Mecklenburg County Health Department notified them of the results Thursday. The skunk was captured Monday in the Peninsula Shores Drive neighborhood after being attacked by a dog.

Officials say the skunk was attacked after entering the yard where the dog lives.

The dog is current on rabies vaccination, according to officials, and will be taken in for a booster following the encounter.

CMPD AC&C reminds pet owners to keep their pets current on all vaccinations, including rabies. The AC&C Shelter offers Mecklenburg County residents FREE rabies vaccinations and $10 microchips at their Byrum Drive location on the second Saturday of each month.
