Man Sentenced For 2017 Armed Robbery Of Morganton Jewelry Store

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Lexington, North Carolina man has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in the 2017 armed robbery of a Morganton, North Carolina jewelry store.

On Tuesday March 5th, 2019, Shannon James Diehl, 36, was sentenced to eight to 11 years in prison by Judge Robert C. Ervin during Burke County Superior Court.

Diehl was charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, and three counts of Second-Degree Kidnapping.  He will serve the sentence in the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections.

Investigators say, on November 11th, 2017, video surveillance shows Diehl and another person enter the store and force three employees against a wall at gunpoint.  Diehl and the other suspect then smashed the display cases with hammers and stole more than $43,000 of merchandise before fleeing the scene.

Diehl and his co-conspirator were later apprehended in Lenoir, North Carolina.
