Boiling Springs Rallies Around Gardner Webb Basketball Team
BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The field is set for the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Within the talented crowded of teams is Gardner Webb University. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are “dancing” for the first time.
“I love Gardner Webb basketball. This is awesome,” said Cassie Dills.
She is a life-long Dawgs fan.
“This is small town Boiling Springs,” said Dills. “Our team is like doing something. We’re going to the dance. It’s exciting.”
Dills got married on the Gardner Webb campus. Her mother is an alum.
Scarlet and Black run deep in Boiling Springs.
“The community has really rallied behind the basketball team,” said Brendan Boylan.
The former student and the voice of GW basketball says this has been a magical season.
“This year we’re able to break through that. The community was behind them all those years in the semifinals,” said Boylan.
After a perfect record at home and a win in the conference championship over Radford; Gardner Webb gets a shot in the NCAA Tournament.
The Tucker Student Center was packed Sunday night to celebrate the team’s selection.
“It seems like everybody in the town came out today and supported us and we really appreciate that,” said Senior Forward DJ Laster.
Signs and balloons could be found around town.
“Oh my gosh it was crazy,” said Dills, “it was like the best day ever you know. Like, you’ve been working up to this for so long and it’s finally paid off. So it was awesome.”
It may just be a basketball game and Garnder Webb may just be a long shot.
“Getting your name on a national platform is going to make all the difference in the world,” said Boylan.
But for the people of Boiling Springs, this March means more.
“This is a great place to be so to be able to see more people start recognizing Gardner Webb; I think it’s going to be great,” said Dills.
GW plays the University of Virginia at 3:10 on Friday in Columbia South Carolina.
Virginia is a #1 seed. They lost to a 16 seed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
