GASTON COUNTY, NC — Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement has confirmed a raccoon tested positive for rabies.
The raccoon was killed by a dog on Saturday, according to officials, in the area of Unity Church Road. GCPD AC&E collected the animal and sent it to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh, which confirmed the results on Tuesday.
Officials say they are reaching out to pet owners in the area to ensure all animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement Division stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety, as well as the health and safety of their owners and community.
