GASTONIA, NC — Police say a vehicle overturned Wednesday night after the driver lost control on I-85 northbound while trying to change lanes.
The accident happened around 8pm. According to police, Scotty Atkins, 49 of Kings Mountain, was trying to merge into the left lane from the center lane when he tried to jerk the vehicle back to the right and lost control.
Atkins reportedly ran off the right side of the interstate and flipped the vehicle.
A witness tells police Atkins was not speeding or driving erratically when the accident occurred.
Police say Atkins was partially ejected and his passenger, 48-year-old Holly Bridges, was completely thrown from the vehicle.
Atkins was pronounced dead on arrival at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. Officials say Bridges was taken to the hospital in critical condition but was alert later in the evening.
Police are still investigating.
