On the heels of what UNC Charlotte’s Chancellor, Philip Dubois called “the saddest day in UNC Charlotte’s history,” a sea of green gathered at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

The arena was filled with students, alumni, faculty, staff and members of the Charlotte community who came to honor those killed and injured in the Kennedy Building attack. Local and state leaders, including Mayor Vi Lyles and Governor Roy Cooper were also in attendance.

Fighting back tears at times, Dr. Dubois said during the vigil, “We can’t bring them back, but with your help we will find a way to remember their presence.”

Attendees were also invited to join a candlelight vigil, which was held in the Star Quad on UNC Charlotte’s campus immediately following the vigil at Halton.

Some students at the vigil say they have already seen counselors who were available on campus. Others say they have turned to their faith to find comfort and healing.
