Original Story:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a pedestrian in a wheelchair died after being hit by a vehicle in north Charlotte Saturday night.
On Saturday June 1st, at about 11:20 p.m., CMPD officers responded to an accident involving two cars and a pedestrian in a wheel chair on W. Sugar Creek Road near N. Tryon Street.
Officers found an unresponsive man lying in the road as well as a 2007 Toyota Corolla and 2007 Dodge Magnum that had been involved in an accident.
MEDIC took the pedestrian to Atrium Health where he was pronounced dead.
The drivers of the Toyota and the Dodge were not injured and their were no other passengers in either vehicle. They were both wearing seatbelts and neither speed nor impairment are believed to be factors in the crash.
Investigators say the Toyota Corolla was traveling north on W. Sugar Creek in the left lane when the vehicle struck the pedestrian before switching lanes and stopping in right lane. The Toyota was then rear-ended by the Dodge.
Police say the pedestrian was not in the crosswalk when the incident occurred. Authorities are awaiting test results to determine if alcohol or other impairment was a factor for the pedestrian.
The case is still under investigation and anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Crum with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169 Ext4.
