Police Asking For Help In Identifying Suspect Responsible For Sexual Assault
CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD says an unarmed security guard was raped and robbed at gunpoint while working at a South End construction site. Surveillance video shows the suspect running away. Police are still looking for him.
Surveillance video shows a man jumping a fence, sprinting across the light rail tracks then hopping another fence. Police say this happened moments after he sexually assaulted a security guard while she worked at a South End construction site. It’s about a block away from Sara Strucko’s apartment.
“It’s really scary considering it’s so close to home,” says Strucko.
CMPD says around 10pm Sunday , a 32-year-old security guard was on duty patrolling the construction site on New Bern Road in South End. That’s when the suspect first approached her.
“The suspect came to her and apologized for an incident that occurred on May the 27th and May the 30th. Where she approached him because he was asleep in the building. We think the suspect is possibly homeless,” says CMPD Lt.Muriel Hughes.
The security guard told officers she encountered the suspect twice last week, when she found him sleeping in the construction site and asked him to leave.
Police say he left and came back around 2:40 Monday morning. That’s when he forced her at gunpoint into a room of a building on the construction site and sexually assaulted her. She did not have a gun. He ran away taking her Samsung tablet, pepper spray and flash light.
“This suspect is a predator. He waited, possibility waited for this victim to go inside the building to assault her.”
The police report says she was taken to the hospital with bruises and scratches.
The construction site is about a block away from rail trail and the New Bern light rail stop. Jessica Wallace uses the light rail a lot, she says she’ll be more aware of her surroundings.
“I look around, I look at the people I see whose getting on and off the train, whose at the bus stop. All of that,” says Wallace.0.
