Original (June 12, 2019):
The CMPD is investigating after one person was killed and three others were injured in a shooting at a graduation party in uptown Charlotte.
The shooting occurred just after midnight at the Post Uptown Place apartments on Graham Street near 6th street.
Police say an apartment was rented as a short term rental. Airbnb released the following statement to WCCB:
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and stand ready to support local law enforcement with their investigation. The safety of our community is our priority, and with more than 2 million guests checking into Airbnb listings every night, negative incidents are incredibly rare.”
Airbnb also told WCCB that the booking guest has been banned from using the platform and the listing for the apartment has been suspended as the investigation into the shooting continues.
A neighbor’s surveillance video recorded more than a dozen gunshots being fired at the time of the shooting. CMPD held a news conference and the shooting stemmed from an argument between two people.
“One person pulled out a firearm and started to shoot, there was another one seen pulling out a firearm and started to return fire,” says CMPD Captain Rob Dance.
One weapon was recovered at the scene of the shooting, according to the CMPD.
Calvin Haines, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene and two other male victims were taken to Atrium Health. A fourth male victim showed up to Novant Hospital later. The ages of the victims are 22, 19 and 16-years-old. The 16-year-old is reportedly in critical condition. Police say most of the people at the party were teenagers.
According to the police report, the 16-year-old victim had drugs or alcohol. CMPD says it will charge anyone who provided alcohol to anyone underage.
