Ex-NFL Quarterback In Stable Condition Following Concord Shooting; Suspect Arrested

CONCORD, N.C. — Police in Concord have charged the man accused of shooting ex-NFL quarterback and former South Carolina Gamecock, Anthony Wright on Monday afternoon.

William “Willie” Moses Hooker, Jr. of Charlotte was arrested on Wednesday in Graham, North Carolina. Hooker is charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

According to the Concord Police Department, officers responded to the shooting on Middlecrest Drive Northwest off Poplar Tent Road around 12:49 p.m. They located Anthony Wright suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Wright was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was rushed into surgery but is now in stable condition, according to a news release.

Police say further investigation revealed that Wright was shot by his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, William “Willie” Hooker, Jr.  The shooting stemmed from an altercation that started when Hooker showed up to drop off his daughter, according to a news release.

Wright had an eight year NFL career with five teams and won a Superbowl with the 2007 Giants. Before turning pro, Wright was the starting quarterback for the Gamecocks from 1996 to 1998.
