STANLY COUNTY, NC — Authorities say the body of a 17-year-old boy who drowned while swimming with friends was pulled from Badin Lake late Wednesday evening.
Investigators say they first received a call about a possible drowning around 7:30 p.m. near the Old Whitney Boat Landing in New London. Three teens were reportedly swimming in the area when one of them went under and never resurfaced.
Crews from the Stanly County Rescue Squad, Badin Fire Department, New London Fire Department, Stanly County EMS and the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office searched the area for just over an hour before finding the missing swimmer.
Officials say the teen’s body was located using sonar equipment. Due to the victim’s age, the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office says his name is not being released at this time unless the family decides otherwise.
Investigators say the death does not appear to be suspicious and there is no indication of alcohol use.
