GoFundMe Created For Pregnant Teen Shot At West Charlotte Strip Mall

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has charged the man they say shot a pregnant teen at a west Charlotte strip mall on Saturday, June 22nd.

CMPD says Raquan Smith, 16, was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, and Felony Conspiracy. He made his first appearance in court on Monday.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help with expenses for the victims, 19-year-old Alani Blake and her new baby girl, Se’Khani.

On the evening of Saturday, June 22nd, CMPD officers responded to a shooting in the parking lot of a strip mall on Beatties Ford Road near Fairdale Drive.

Alani, who was pregnant at the time of the shooting, suffered a gunshot wound to the right hip, which, according to the GoFundMe page, passed through her lower abdomen and lodged in her left pelvic bone. She was taken by MEDIC to Atrium Health’s Carolina Medical Center where she underwent an emergency C-section and gave birth to her 28-weeks-old baby girl, Se’Khani.

The GoFundMe account says Alani is still recovering in the ICU/Trauma Center and will have to learn to walk again as she undergoes additional surgeries. Se’Khani will reportedly stay in the NICU until September, which is close to her original due date.

Alani and her mother, Carlesta Blake, had just moved to a new apartment, according to the page, and Alani was visiting friends in her old neighborhood when the shooting occurred. Police say they do not believe Alani was the intended target of the shooting.
