Neighbors Are Fed Up With Condition Of Gaston County Cemetery
GASTON COUNTY, NC. — Missing headstones, overgrown grass and a lot of trash piled up. Neighbors are fed up with the condition of Morningside Cemetery in Gaston County.
Danelle Darby lives down the street. She’s fed up with trash being dumped on the 5-acre cemetery property.
“Because they’re lazy, but I just don’t understand why they can’t go down an extra mile down the road to the recycling center that we’re provided,” says Darby.
She’s not the only one who feels that way.
“It makes me feel like just telling them all off. Because those people have gone down there to be buried, peaceful. Not to come and have stuff pulled over top of them,” says Gaston County resident Gwen Brewer.
Beasley’s Memorial Gardens owned the cemetery. Police arrested Odell Beasley and a gravedigger in 2007, after they found exposed human bones. The Gaston County District Attorney later dropped the charges. The company is no longer in business.
So who’s responsible for taking care of the cemetery? The Assistant County Manager tells WCCB the county is not involved because it’s a private non-perpetual cemetery. Neighbors just want someone to take responsibility.
