Soccer Fest Could Lead CLT to Major League Soccer

Charlotte, NC — People packed Romare Bearden park Friday night for a huge soccer fan fest event.

It’s another big soccer weekend in Charlotte as the city moved another step closer toward landing a major league soccer team today.

“So, when we heard about this I’m like, ‘Wow!’,” said Maria Francisco. “Let’s go check them out! Let’s go check them out!”

The city is hosting the International Champions Cup Game, House of Soccer Fan Fest and Megan Rapinoe’s World Cup Victory Tour.

“I think it just creates a buzz,” said Brad Wylde.

Wylde is Charlotte Soccer Academy’s Director. WCCB Charlotte met with him after Ally Bank announced it would sponsor a pro team here.He says sponsors are key.

“That can solidify the fact that, that the bid is a good one for MLS to consider this new city for the league,” said Wylde.
Wylde says decision makers need to see Charlotte can get 30,000-50,000 fans in the stands.

So, fan fest could help that.

WCCB Charlotte met people who flew in from Canada for the weekend events.

We watched soccer with a mom from Morganton.

People out there playing games, watching the matches say MLS would bring them to Charlotte more often.

“Oh, yeah! I would! Yes Yes!” said Francisco.

Rapinoe holds a clinic at the park Saturday around 2:00 pm.

The charlotte women’s team and celebrities will be at Bank of America Stadium Saturday to watch London’s Arsenal take on Italy’s Fiorentina.
