Piles Of Trash On Abandoned Cemetery In Gaston County Have Been Cleaned Up
CHARLOTTE, NC. — Piles of trash on an abandoned cemetery in Gaston County has finally been cleaned up. With the overgrown grass and missing headstones — there’s still a lot of work to be done. County officials say they’re working on the problem. In the meantime, the community is stepping in.
For the past year, mowing and maintaining a portion of Morningside Cemetery has been a labor of love for Deron Gibson. He has family members buried there. He’s finally getting help.
What used to be a pile of trash near the headstones of his loved ones, now green grass.
“The county brought in the public works to come in clean it up, to try and help out,” says Gaston County Commissioner Chad Brown.
There’s still a lot of work to be done to Morningside Cemetery. Theres overgrown grass, and missing headstones. Beasley’s Memorial Gardens owned the cemetery, but the company is no longer in business. The county says they don’t believe there’s any living person associated with it.
Brown tells WCCB the county is looking on how they can help moving forward.
“The county is trying to help out anyway we can see, and I’ve directed the people there to try and make sure they’re at least vigilant of what’s going on.”
Neighbors and volunteers will come help mow the rest of the cemetery on Saturday and try to make it look nice. A neighbor started a Facebook page to help get the word out.
