CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says one person is dead after a SWAT situation Friday evening.
Police say the standoff ended after a woman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a vehicle parked on the fifth floor of the the Medical Center Plaza Visitor’s Center on Blythe Boulevard.
The suspect reportedly barricaded herself inside the vehicle for several hours. At one point, CMPD posted that the situation had been contained and SWAT negotiators were continuing to speak with her.
Posts on social media say the hospital initially announced an active shooter situation over the intercom, and issued the “all clear” a short time later. CMPD says initial call for service did reference a shooting at the visitor parking deck at Atrium Health Carolina’s Medical Center, but there was not an active shooter situation.
Police have not released any additional information on what led to the initial call.
The woman was pronounced dead on the scene, police say after a self-inflicted gunshot wound. CMPD says officers did not discharged any weapons during the standoff.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
