WEDDINGTON, N.C. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office says an alligator was found in the backyard of a home in Weddington over the weekend.

Deputies say they responded to the home in the Vintage Creek subdivision after receiving a 911 call.  Deputies were able to safely remove the alligator, which was estimated to weigh 10-15 pounds and was approximately two to three feet long.

The alligator was taken to the animal shelter until N.C. Wildlife officers arrived to take further care of the reptile.  Deputies say they do not know how the alligator got into the area.
