YORK COUNTY, SC — The York County Sheriff’s Office says Sgt. Randy Clinton is retiring after 35 years of service. Clinton survived the January 2018 shooting that claimed the life of Detective Mike Doty and left several others injured.

According to the YCSO, Sgt. Clinton served most of his 35 years as a K-9 handler and supervisor for the York County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit. Officials say it was his leadership and hard work that helped establish the unit as the best in the area.

The YCSO released the following video on Wednesday to commemorate Sgt. Clinton’s 35 years of service:

In January 2019, one year after the deadly shooting, Sgt. Clinton was among 10 York County law enforcement officers awarded the Medal of Valor by the South Carolina Sheriff’s Association.

The York County Sheriff’s Department says, “The award  is presented to law enforcement officers who perform actions above and beyond the call of duty; exhibit exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness, and presence of mind; or act with unusual swiftness, regardless of their personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect human life.”
