CHARLOTTE, NC — The driver involved in a deadly northwest Charlotte accident is now facing multiple charges.

Xavier Byrd, 21, turned himself in to authorities on Thursday, according to CMPD. He is charged with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, Involuntary Manslaughter, two counts of Felony Serious Injury by Motor Vehicle, Driving While Impaired and Reckless Driving.

Investigators say Byrd was driving a 2019 Audi Q5 on July 14, 2019 at a high rate of speed on Brookshire Boulevard when he lost control and flipped. Everyone inside the vehicle was ejected, police say, resulting in one death and several serious injuries.

Police say 21-year-old Christian Lanier died at the scene.

Following an investigation into the crash, authorities say they determined Byrd was impaired on alcohol while driving the vehicle at a high rate of speed.
