Troopers Identify Moped Rider Killed Wednesday After Being Hit By Two Vehicles In Burke County

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol have identified the moped rider who died Wednesday after colliding with a SUV and was hit by another vehicle while lying in the road in Burke County.

The accident occurred at about 6:35 a.m., on Old NC 10 at the intersection with the I-40 West off ramp.

According to the NC State Highway Patrol, 57-year-old Kevin Huffman of Hildebran was riding his moped east on Old NC 10 when he failed to stop at a red light and collided with a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox.

Huffman was thrown from the vehicle and, after lying in the road a few minutes, was struck by a 2010 Toyota 4Runner traveling east on Old NC 10.

Bystanders who were attempting to assist Huffman were able to move out of the way of the 4Runner, but authorities say it was dark and visibility was low due to fog in the area.

After being transported by EMS, Huffman was pronounced dead at Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge-Valdese.

Neither the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox nor the Toyota 4Runner were injured.  No charges have been filed at this time.
