Chaos In Uptown: Officials Investigating 3-Alarm Fire And A Shooting

CHARLOTTE, NC. — Chaos in Uptown Charlotte with streets closed and people evacuated, as firefighters battle a fire in a high-rise. At the same time, police swarm after a man is shot in front of a nearby hotel. An innocent bystander got shot after a fight at the Epicentre.

The fire happened inside the Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen on the second floor at one Bank of America plaza, around 2:45 pm.

“In the elevator, you could smell like a charcoal smoke smell,” says Austin Ledbetter.

Ledbetter was on the 30th floor and says he didn’t hear any fire alarms. Charlotte Fire says the first four floors of the high-rise were evacuated. Firefighters helped six people out of the stairwell.

“Typically in high rises when fire alarms go off, they only go off on the floors that are affected and expected to evacuate,” says CFD Battalion Chief Matt Westover.

Dozens of firefighters worked to put out the blaze. Investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started.

Just down the street, police say two people were fighting at the Epicentre around 4 pm. One person fired a shot and missed, instead hitting an innocent bystander across the street. It was outside of Omni Hotel at Trade Street and South College Street. Medic took the victim to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say a suspect has been arrested.
