Matthews Police Say Hit and Run Was Intentional
CHARLOTTE, NC — It was a busy shopping day outside the Matthews Aldi, but feet from the entrance, there is a growing makeshift memorial for a woman hit and killed by a car earlier this week.
Flowers and candles surround a picture of 79-year-old Vira Nahorna.
“It’s just a tragedy,” said one customer.
Orange spray paint on the ground shows where Nahorna was hit and killed by a driver while walking to her car.
“It’s unfortunate that that happened,” said another customer.
On Friday, police said Narhorna’s killing was intentional.
“We can say with a level of certainty that the collision with Mrs. Nahorna was no accident,” said Matthews Police Chief Clark Pennington.
Police have charged 54-year-old Sawan Alshabani with first degree murder. Police say she also tried to run over four other people.
According to police, Alshabani called 911 about an hour after the incident and turned herself in. Police took her to the hospital for a medical and mental evaluation.
The disturbing details has regular shoppers stunned.
“Terrible for the family,” said a customer.
A devastated family now without a wife, mother, and friend. Police searching for answers to why someone would want to hurt Nahorna.
“I really can’t comment on the motive at this time, but it is part of our investigation and it is continuing,” said Pennington.
