Communities Get Creative as Rain Threatens Halloween Festivities

FORT MILL, SC –  There hasn’t been rain on Halloween in the Charlotte area since 2014, but with rain in the forecast, communities are debating moving Trick-or-Treat festivities to Friday.  Some towns in the surrounding area are making plans to move their annual festivals.

In Fort Mill, the annual Halloween event on Main Street typically draws about 1200 people.

“We wanted to make sure we kept everyone safe and dry this year,” said Chris Sardelli, the Public Relations Manager for the town of Fort Mill.

They moved the festival to the YMCA Complex. The vendors and activities will all go on as planned indoors.

“Logistically, it worked out great and it’s a pretty big space. So I think we’ll be able to fit it in just fine,” said Sardelli.

The potential for rain creates other issues. Many communities are debating moving the Trick-or-Treat festivities to another day. Some already have.

Charlotte city councilman Tariq Bokhari posted the question to social media and it garnered a mixed response.

One person writing, “I’m a no. It’s ok for our kids to learn to deal with disappointments.” \

Another saying “I’m in favor of postponing until Friday!”

As neighborhoods grapple with what to do, the rain also increases the potential for accidents. A Washington Post analysis found that 54 people aged 18 or younger were hit and killed by vehicles on Halloween from 2004 to 2018. They found that compares to just 16 on a typical day.

“Be visible and intentional,” said Jeffrey Page and officer with CMPD.

The department offered tips to keep people safe no matter when they Trick-or-Treat.

“Plan and discuss your route with those who you’re traveling with,” explained Page.

There are also indoor alternatives to outdoor trick-or-treating.
