CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Winter is headed our way and with it we’re likely to see some snow, some ice, and some definite drops in temperature. However, it doesn’t have to bring your day to a halt – with the proper car care ahead of time, your ride can handle anything that Mother Nature has to throw at it this season. Toyota of N Charlotte is here with for car care tips for prepping your vehicle for sudden drops in temperature and inclement winter weather – check it out.
4 ways to prepare your car for winter weather
1) Get yourself some new wiper blades.
Conventional windshield wiper blades can get the job done most of the year, but winter’s harsh temperatures can do some real damage to them. Invest in a pair of winter wiper blades, which are more durable and designed to withstand freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. Our Charlotte car care experts can point you to the right pair for your ride.
2) Give your tires a onceover.
How are your car tires looking? Unlike our neighbors up north, we don’t really need to swap our all-season tires in the winter. However, it’s essential to check their condition before you hit the roads in winter weather. First, you want them to be inflated to the proper PSI (which you can find in your owner’s manual). Second, you want them to have enough tread to grip icy or snowy roads. Our Charlotte car care experts are happy to take a look, but if you prefer the DIY approach do the penny test. Stick a penny into the tire’s tread with Abe Lincoln’s head down – if you can see the top of his head, it’s time for a new set of shoes for your ride.
3) Consider switching your car’s fluids.
Sudden drops and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on the fluids under the hood. Consider swapping them out for temperature-resistant grades, which can withstand the cold and still get the job done. Schedule an appointment and let our techs get you the right fluids to take on the season. Additionally, stay on top of routine oil changes at our Charlotte auto service center. Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean your car isn’t working overtime – it needs oil to keep the engine cool and lubricated when you’re out on the road.
4) Have your battery inspected by an expert.
Winter weather can do a number on your car battery, especially if it’s not in great shape to begin with. Let our car care experts inspect it! They’ll look for visible problems like swelling, rust, and leaks, but they can also test the voltage to ensure your battery has enough juice to get things going all winter long.
